Cyclone Biporjoy To Make Landfall In Gujarat On Thursday

Cyclone Biporjoy, which intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Sunday, is likely to make landfall in Gujarat on Thursday, June 15. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat, warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The cyclone is currently located over the east-central Arabian Sea, about 600 km southwest of Mumbai. It is moving north-northeastwards at a speed of 15 kmph and is expected to intensify further over the next 24 hours.

The IMD has forecast that Biporjoy will make landfall between Mandvi in Kutch district and Karachi in Pakistan around noon on Thursday. The maximum sustained wind speed will be 125-135 kilometres per hour (kmph) gusting to 150 kmph.

The cyclone is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Gujarat, with isolated spells of very heavy rainfall. The IMD has forecast rainfall of up to 200 mm in some parts of Saurashtra and Kutch.

The IMD has also warned of strong winds gusting up to 150 kmph along the coast. The sea condition is likely to be rough and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

The Gujarat government has taken all precautionary measures to deal with the cyclone. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 10 teams in Gujarat and is on standby. The state government has also set up control rooms in all districts.

People living in coastal areas have been advised to stay indoors and avoid venturing out unless necessary. They have also been advised to keep a stock of food and water.

The cyclone is expected to cause widespread damage in Gujarat. The state government has urged people to cooperate with the authorities in the relief and rescue operations.
